Dragontail Peak-Colchuck Col/South Gulley Route

At more than 8860', Dragontail Peak is the second highest peak in the Stuart Range. It is named for the many rock pinnacles that lie along its narrow SW ridge. The summit can be reached with little technical difficulty from the Colchuck Col. From the col, ascend NE up a rock/snow gulley to the SW ridge then descend into Dragontail Creek Basin. The descent was on steep snow (probably class 3 when the snow melts) and was the most difficult section of the climb. Once in the basin, traverse to the 8600' saddle that lies to the east of the summit and then scramble to the summit rocks. A nice alternative descent (glassading!) is down Snow Creek Glacier to Aasgard Pass then back to Colchuck Lake.
